Businesses are leaving behind the traditional ways of communication and improvising to adapt to the changing scenarios. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warc.com\/content\/paywall\/article\/Warc-Data\/Global_Ad_Trends_State_of_The_Industry_2020_21\/134804\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">report by WARC<\/a> predicted that global ad spends on traditional media will come down by 10.2% YoY compared to the results of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s have a look at how online advertising has been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warc.com\/newsandopinion\/news\/video-adspend-bucks-h1-digital-dip\/44234\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">reports<\/a>, <strong>digital advertising spends in the UK fell by 5% YoY in the first half of 2020<\/strong> compared to H1 2019. But this 5% decline looks promising if we compare it with the drastic decline in the total ad market.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Talking about the subcategories in the digital marketing industry, the same report also shows that <strong>display advertising grew by 0.3% to \u00a32.84bn<\/strong>. And within display advertising, <strong>video advertising <\/strong>grew by 5.7% to \u00a31.35bn (this clearly reflects the surge of digital streaming during the lockdown).<\/p>\n<p>Investments in <strong>Search Advertising dipped by 3.7%<\/strong>, with revenue down by \u00a3143m to \u00a33.7bn compared to the first half of 2019.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>However, as per the Mobile Quarterly Index by <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmatic.com\/reports\/pubmatic-quarterly-mobile-index-qmi-q2-2020\/\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">PubMatic<\/a>, <strong>mobile ad spends globally soared 71% YoY<\/strong> during the second quarter of 2020.<\/li>\n<li>The same report by PubMatic also claims that <strong>mobile video ad spends globally rose by 116%<\/strong> compared to pre-pandemic figures.<\/li>\n<li>Ad spends by the <strong>video game industry also increased by <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmatic.com\/reports\/pubmatic-quarterly-mobile-index-qmi-q2-2020\/\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">80% YoY<\/a><\/strong> in the first two weeks of November.<\/li>\n<li>Worldwide <strong>social media ad spends jumped by 30.9% <\/strong>in April 2020 as compared to the figures of March 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialbakers.com\/blog\/how-social-media-advertising-has-adjusted-to-coronavirus\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">Industries leading the way<\/a> to this surge in social media ads included Beverages (51%), Beauty (43.6%), and Accommodation (43%).<\/li>\n<li>In fact, in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialbakers.com\/blog\/how-social-media-advertising-has-adjusted-to-coronavirus\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">Hootsuite report<\/a>, we found that <strong>Instagram\u2019s advertising <\/strong>reach during July-September 2020 has increased by 7.1%, whereas Facebook saw a growth of 2.2%.<\/li>\n<li>Further, we found that the industry-wide <strong>Cost Per Click (CPC) increased by 18.9%<\/strong> over the same period (April 2020). Industries like Auto (35.1%), Accommodation (33.3%), and E-commerce (26.2%) saw the highest increase in CPC.<\/li>\n<li>However, the recent industry average for CPC is $0.088 and that is still less than what it was in February ($0.130).<\/li>\n<li>We also looked at the industry-wide<strong> cost per thousand impressions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnicalculator.com\/finance\/cpm\">CPM<\/a>) <\/strong>figures. This showed an <strong>average rise of 15%<\/strong> led by the beauty industry (28.9%) followed by retail (25.8%).<\/li>\n<li>And of course, it all boils down to the effectiveness of running ads. So, we dug deeper to check if the industry-wide CTR figures were holding up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Surprisingly, the average click-through-rate (CTR) remained steady or improved in some cases. As a result, we have more time to spare. This has led to a surge in the time spent on online activities (social media to be precise). A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactmybiz.com\/blog\/marketing-during-a-pandemic-stats\/\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">survey<\/a> suggests that 39% of the respondents agreed that they were spending more time on <a href=\"https:\/\/dashthis.com\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-social-media-reporting\/\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, let\u2019s look at some social media trends and statistics post-COVID:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of social media users was forecasted to grow by <strong>2.5% in the pre-pandemic period<\/strong>. However, it has grown a modest <strong>3.3% post-pandemic<\/strong>! Digging into the demographics, we found that most of the growth has come from consumers aged 35 and older.<\/li>\n<li>Prediction reports say that there will be <strong>212.1 million social media users by 2020<\/strong>. And the figure is expected to grow to 226 million by 2024.<\/li>\n<li>In the UK, 17m social media users are now spending more than <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/econsultancy.com\/stats-roundup-coronavirus-impact-on-marketing-advertising\/\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">66 minutes every day<\/a> on TikTok<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Marketers expect a <strong>66% increase in social media content creation<\/strong> during the pandemic.<\/li>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visa.co.uk\/about-visa\/newsroom\/press-releases.3042617.html\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">analysis conducted by Visa<\/a> shows that <strong>1 out of 4 online purchases <\/strong>is now made via social media interaction.<\/li>\n<li>Going by the same report, <strong>60% of businesses are planning to increase their Instagram budget in 2021<\/strong>. And around 30% are planning to do the same for Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn.<\/li>\n<li>Talking about social media goals, the above report also says that <strong>73% of marketers have kept \u2018new user acquisition\u2019 at the top of their list for 2021<\/strong> compared to 46% last year.<\/li>\n<li>Furthermore, brands\u2019 interest in influencer marketing has increased after the COVID-19 outbreak. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/econsultancy.com\/stats-roundup-coronavirus-impact-on-marketing-advertising\/\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">59% of influencers<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>say that more brands are approaching them for partnerships as compared to the pre-COVID times. Eventually, we started to accept this as the new normal. As a result, the offline retail industry took a huge blow. According to The Retail Gazette report, footfall in retail destinations plummeted by 31.5%.<\/p>\n<p>After reading this, we were intrigued to know if the eCommerce industry benefited from this mayhem.
