Now we&#8217;re gonna go on to the longer questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Okay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The first one is you started out buying shoes at Macy&#8217;s, and now you&#8217;re running payments across an entire continent. Did you plan any of this, or did life just take you there?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Absolutely not. I joined Macy&#8217;s right out of college. I was there for 14 years. I started as a buyer. Uh, did a lot of different jobs at Macy&#8217;s. I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades, master of none. But, uh, it was really fortuitous that I joined payments. It was during COVID, and I was on furlough. And my husband really, you know, pushed me to explore new opportunities, and I interviewed at Facebook and Amazon and Google, and they all said, &#8220;Great, but you have no technology experience.&#8221; And I said, &#8220;I run one of the largest e-commerce sites in America.&#8221; And they said no. But luckily, Klarna saw my Macy&#8217;s experience, and we were onboarding Macy&#8217;s at the time, so they said, &#8220;Can you come help us with this?&#8221; And, you know, a year or two later, I was getting calls all the time looking for my, uh, tech experience. So, you know, life happens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And then what did retail teach you about people that no business school ever could?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Honestly, I always say, and I was just talking about this, I think retail is the best foundation for everyone. And when I started in retail, I started on the shop floor, so actually as an associate serving customers. And I think it really shows you the importance of understanding your customer and putting the customer at the center of your decision-making. And you know, I say this all the time today, you know, you don&#8217;t set the price, whether it&#8217;s, uh, for your payment services or for your end products that you&#8217;re selling. The customers decides, and really, they&#8217;re the ultimate decision maker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And so Klarna started as a simple pay-later button, and now it&#8217;s doing bank accounts, debit cards, and even resale. At what point does a company stop being one thing and become something else entirely?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You know, we&#8217;ve been doing this for 20 years, and we like to think that we&#8217;ve been doing buy now, pay later for more than just, you know, recently. But I think what has evolved is the consumer preferences, and we&#8217;re finding that customers are choosing different payment methods for different choices in their life. So they may be choosing pay now for their small-ticket items or discretionary spend, and they may be choosing pay later for mid-size ticket items where they want a little more flexibility. And then they&#8217;re choosing fair financing for those large-ticket purchases in their life where they really want that flexibility. So I think we&#8217;ve evolved into giving them those options. And then when you trust a company to manage your payments, you can also look to them for other services like becoming a savings bank, or being able to do cash back, or peer-to-peer payments. And really, all of the innovations and all of the products and services that we make are driven by requests that come directly from our consumers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Does that kind of growth ever feel scary from the inside, or is it exciting?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Absolutely scary when you have a million and one things on your to-do list and not enough resources to do it. And, you know, I know it&#8217;s cliche, and everyone says time is their scarcest resource, but it&#8217;s really true. When we wanna be so ambitious, we wanna do so many things, but you also wanna do things really, really well. Striking that balance and knowing what is possible, um, really becomes your superpower because otherwise you could just really get lost in the noise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Speaking of a million things to do, you have a million merchants trusting you with how they get paid. Does weight of that ever actually hit you?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> All the time, especially as a former retailer. You know, I understand how important cash flow management is, particularly for some of, like, the small D2C businesses that we work with, where, you know, they don&#8217;t have that luxury or they&#8217;re looking for that cash to be able to fund their next purchase order. So the gravity of it is not lost on me at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And how do you stay connected to all these small business owners when you&#8217;re managing numbers that big?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That&#8217;s a great question. I would say really listening to the consumer and getting that feedback and having a two-way feedback loop. And we&#8217;re fortunate enough to work with some really large distribution partners that manage those small and medium-sized businesses, and making sure that we work really closely with them, so when they&#8217;re dialing into their customer service, that information is getting back to us so we can really continuously improve our products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Governments are now writing laws specifically about buy now, pay later. What&#8217;s it like working in an industry that moved so fast, regulators had to literally chase it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I think in some ways, innovation is always going to be faster than regulation. Um, but you know, like I said, we&#8217;re a fully licensed bank. We&#8217;re selling regulated products. We&#8217;ve been doing this for a long time. We have the infrastructure in place. We really invest in compliance infrastructure, and we do it ahead of it being a requirement. You know, today we&#8217;re in the Netherlands, and a hot topic is, um, making sure that you&#8217;re not selling to underage consumers. And, you know, we&#8217;ve been doing double identity verification on consumers back in 2025, not because we knew regulation is, was coming and because we would have to do it, but actually because we think it&#8217;s the right thing to do to protect the younger generation of shoppers, and it&#8217;s actually really core to our brand to be able to make sure that customers trust us and we are protecting that next generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So the regulations debate, particularly in Europe, is spread across various industries. Do you think regulations protect people or just slow down something that was already helping them?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I think regulation should be outcome-based, meaning it sh- the question you want to ask yourself is, is this good for the consumer? Not is the provider checking off a 47-step process. That&#8217;s going to lead to safer outcomes that benefit all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You&#8217;re building teams where AI handles a lot of the work so humans can focus on what matters, but how much of a relationship-driven job can a machine actually do?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That is a great question, and I, I never really used to consider myself a salesperson i- really until AI. And now you look at AI and you say, you know, relationship management is one thing that AI won&#8217;t be able to replace. So I really have leaned into that skill and, and to that part of my, my role. Um, but it&#8217;s true. At the end of the day, people like doing business with people, not necessarily, like, with businesses, and having that relationship and building that trust is incredibly important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What part of your job do you think, uh, will never be replaced, no matter how good the technology gets?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sales, absolutely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So sales will remain till the end of time for humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I think so in some way, depending&#8230; We don&#8217;t know what we&#8217;re selling, but we&#8217;re gonna be selling something.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And what do you think of marketing?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You know, marketing, I still think it&#8217;s important to have someone who&#8217;s setting that creative vision and that creative direction. AI is tremendously helpful in terms of asset creation and content creation, but at the end of the day, it is an agent. It is a co-pilot. It still needs someone to steer the ship and to, to make sure, you know, everyone says this: AI&#8217;s only as good as the prompt that you&#8217;re giving it, right? So you still need someone to set that direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Every company is screaming for attention today. How has Klarna actually managed to cut through all of that and become a brand people genuinely recognize?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You know, creating a consumer-facing brand is a big part of our DNA. And yes, we do celebrity campaigns with A$AP Rocky and Snoop Dogg and Lady Gaga and Shaquille O&#8217;Neal, and, you know, those are all really cool to talk about. But the campaigns that I think really garner that trust and build that authenticity are these bespoke campaigns we do with specific audiences. So if I take sneakerheads, for example, we did this really cool campaign where, you know, sneakers come out and the bots buy all the sneakers. So a customer literally had to put their thumbprint to their ph- phone to prove that they&#8217;re a heartbeat for sneakers. And I think when you do those kinds of campaigns, people think like, &#8220;Wow, that&#8217;s really cool. That&#8217;s really different for a payments company,&#8221; and that&#8217;s really speaking to them. And I think that&#8217;s what sets us apart from a lot of the other payments companies is, like, when we throw a physical event, we actually see a line of young people queuing around the block, and I think, you know, other than American Express at Wimbledon, you don&#8217;t really see that these days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So what&#8217;s the most counterintuitive thing you&#8217;ve learned about grabbing people&#8217;s attention?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Top left. Say more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> All right. Klarna&#8217;s real power is that everyday consumers already love it. How do you walk into a boardroom with a big retailer and use that to your advantage?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That is a great question, and within our shopping app, we have a service or a functionality where customers can shop anywhere through our browser and using a one-time party. And when we walk into a retailer and say to someone, &#8220;You know, we actually have millions of transactions that we&#8217;re processing for you already, and you don&#8217;t even know it,&#8221; that is, like, mind-blowing. It&#8217;s definitely that aha moment where s- a CEO or a CRO is like, &#8220;Wait, what do you mean you can use Klarna already on our site?&#8221; Um, and that really, I think, you know, that demand really speaks volumes for the fact that customers are going to figure out how to pay how they want to pay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And what do most companies get wrong about turning customer loyalty into a sales tool?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You know, I think they&#8217;re always looking at CAC, and obviously, that&#8217;s a really important measure, but ultimately, it&#8217;s about that customer lifetime value and really making sure that you&#8217;re measuring that<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You&#8217;re also on the board of Soles4Souls, turning donated shoes into opportunity for people in poverty. In a world full of performative corporate charity, why does this one actually mean something to you?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yeah, I mean, this is an organization I&#8217;m super proud to be a part of because I&#8217;ve been part of other organizations, um, and this is really a working board. So we&#8217;re going to go to Guatemala this summer, and not only are we going to listen to financial reports and committee updates, but we&#8217;re actually gonna go out and we&#8217;re gonna meet the micro entrepreneurs, and we&#8217;re gonna put shoes on homeless children, and seeing that impact firsthand is just so meaningful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What do you wish more people in power truly understood about what real giving looks like?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I think putting their shoes, their s- their s- themselves in their customer&#8217;s shoes and trying to see someone else&#8217;s perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So now, to change track a bit, what does your typical day look like? You wake up in the morning and then&#8230;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There is no typical day. I would say it depends which country I wake up in. Um, but if I could, it would be Pilates, coffee, emails, and then meet with my customers and meet with my team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How long is your Pilates session?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 50 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wow. And do you go to a class or is it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yeah. I go to a class, two different studios that are equidistant from my house. I can make it there and back within seven minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And what kind of talent is Klarna looking to hire in today&#8217;s job market?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Super agile people who are willing to do hard things and put themselves into uncomfortable situations, and I love to be able to see the, you know, irregular career path that people take because we&#8217;re not necessarily looking for skill set. We&#8217;re looking for ambition and drive and grit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So you&#8217;ve worked across America and now Europe, managing markets that are completely different from each other. What do people get most wrong when they assume humans are basically the same everywhere?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yeah, that was me. I was that naive American and said, &#8220;Spain and Portugal, they&#8217;re right next door. Surely they&#8217;re the same, right?&#8221; Um, but luckily, I had a really strong team around me who was able to educate me and inform me about the cultural differences and customer preferences and markets, and it&#8217;s shocking how different they can be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So what&#8217;s the cultural lesson you had to learn the hard way?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hard way, I went to Japan recently, and we&#8217;re opening that market, which is really exciting &#8217;cause it&#8217;s gonna be our first, uh, foray into Asia, and you have to present&#8230; We, we had to get business cards. We knew we needed business cards. We got the business cards, but we printed them vertically instead of horizontally, and you need to present them in a very specific way so your, the person that you&#8217;re talking to can read them. But because they were vertical instead of horizontal, it was just a faux pas. So we tried our best, but we, we didn&#8217;t, we didn&#8217;t get the whole way there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And how about Europe? Is there something about European consumers that still surprises you even now?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> European consumers or European partners? I would say the French are the, probably one of the most interesting bunch, and it&#8217;s really so relationship-driven and really spending time to get to know each other and to build that trust and to talk about where you&#8217;re going on holiday. Those are the things that actually matter, and then the business comes afterwards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So awards, big stages, global recognition. Strip all of that away. What actually drives you when nobody&#8217;s watching?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The people. I mean, you know, I used to be a retailer. Now I sell payments. I&#8217;d say I, I never imagined that I would be a payments expert by any means, but what I really love is seeing people accomplish really challenging things, go on to be successful, even leaving Klarna to go and starting their own companies. Like, I love to really see career development and people doing amazing things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And what does failure look like for you, and how do you process it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I always say it&#8217;s fine to make a mistake as long as you learn from that mistake, so not making the same mistake twice and actually reflecting on what you could have done differently and then changing your behavior for the next time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What would you tell yourself at the very start of your career if you could go back?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Don&#8217;t take yourself so seriously. I used to be so nervous, used to think about everything I used to say beforehand. You know, used to be that person that didn&#8217;t think my opinion mattered, particularly, like, when you&#8217;re young and you think that you don&#8217;t have that experience. But really, like, that&#8217;s what people are looking for. We want that, um, perspective and that viewpoint because, you know, you are the consumer, and we want that, um, to have that perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So the last question for you is of a personal kind. What would you be doing in your life if not this?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I would love to be a food critic and just, you know, like in Julia Roberts&#8217; movie, and go around and try food and rate it and then let them know that I was the critic, and I think that that would be so fun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Saksham Sharda:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So have you seen Ratatouille as well, I suppose?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Raji Behal:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yes, of course.
